Gotye Glee

Gotye Glee

Gotye Glee, Australian singer Gotyegave his thoughts on a recent cover of his No. 1 song performed on the hit show "Glee" . Gotye reportedly called the performance ultra-dry and criticized the vocals The song, however, went to the top of the Billboard charts the week after the "Glee" episode aired. “Glee” covered Gotye’s smash success single “Somebody That I Used to Know” in a recent episode, but the 31-year-old Australian singer is not too happy with the results.

Gotye, whose real name is Wally de Backer, told the Sunday Mail that the “Glee” version of his breakup song had no soul.

"They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it's playing to you from a cardboard box,'' he said.

The single hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart last week after a steady rise to the top on mainstream radio and having racked up more than 175 million views on YouTube.

Gotye is one of only four Australian artists to achieve the number one position on the Billboard charts. The others are Savage Garden, INXS and Men At Work.

What did you think of "Glee's" version of "Somebody That I Used To Know"?
Last week Gotye made music history last week when his song “Somebody That I Used to Know” landed at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in the US. He joins the ranks of Savage Garden, INXS and Men at Work as one of the few Australian acts to receive the honour (New Zealand artist Kimbra contributed vocals to the track as well). His ascent up the US charts has something to do with fact that the song has been ubiquitous over the past few weeks, and to top it off he was Saturday Night Live’s musical guest on April 14.

Of all the versions of his song he’s heard, there’s one that Gotye (real name Wally De Backer) wasn’t exactly thrilled with: the Glee rendition. It was sung on the show a few weeks ago by Darren Criss and guest star Matt Bomer, and Gotye told the Courier Mail just before singing at Coachella, “They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box.” What do you think of Gotye’s comments?
That’s how Gotye  referred to the ‘Glee‘ cover of ‘Somebody That I Used to Know,’ which was performed on the show’s April 10 ‘Big Brother’ episode.

If you don’t use or encounter the word in everyday conversation, it means ‘small.’ Apparently, the frontman wasn’t feeling what Darren Criss and guest star Matt Bomer did to the song as Blaine and his brother Cooper on the show. His description was as follows: “It made it sound dinky and wrong.”

Billboard reports that the singer also didn’t like how “pop” the show made the song, saying, “They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the vocals were that pop ‘Glee’ style, ultra-dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense.” He continued, “It’s like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box.”

Dinky or not, the song’s appearance on the hit FOX show nevertheless helped it top the Billboard 100 singles chart after the fact. That, combined with his ‘SNL’ appearance, didn’t hurt the song’s chart ascent.

In this case, perhaps he should have been a wee bit thankful, “dinky” or not. Even so, we support an artist’s right to be sensitive or critical when their compositions are covered by others.
