laura dern divorce back on, restarts divorce proceedings a year after husband Ben Harper 'blindsided' her with papers, Their marriage seemed to be over after he served her with divorce papers.And after a failed reconciliation attempt, Laura Dern has restarted divorce proceedings and now looks certain to leave Ben Harper for good.
The 45-year-old Golden Globe winner filed her formal legal response to Harper’s divorce petition on Friday at Los Angeles County Superior Court. According to TMZ she has hired divorce-lawyer-to-the stars Laura Wasser, and is asking for primary physical and joint legal custody of the couple’s two children Ellery, ten, and seven-year-old Jaya,.
In addition she is also seeking spousal support, child support, and attorneys fees from folk and reggae musician Ben.
Sources also told the website their attempted reconciliation was 'very rocky' and she now wants out.
They also said she is already the primary caregiver for the couple’s two children, as well as playing a significant role in raising the 42-year-old musician's two other offspring from a prior marriage.
Following Dern's win for Best Actress in a Television Series Musical or Comedy, she and Harper, a Grammy-winning musician, looked very much together at the HBO bash at the Beverly Hilton.
The 2010 divorce filing by Harper, who Dern married back in 2005, was said to have 'blindsided' the actress.
Although Harper had claimed at the time that the couple had been separated for months - according to friends, they had been living and travelling together more recently.
Harper cited irreconcilable differences in the filing and asked that spousal support be denied to Dern and that the couple share custody of their children.
Prior to tying the knot with Harper, Dern has been linked to Nicholas Cage, Kyle MacLachlan, Jeff Goldblum and Billy Bob Thornton, to whom she was engaged to and living with when he suddenly married Angelina Jolie in 2000.
Dern, who was away filming at the time, read about the marriage, and the obvious end of her relationship, in the newspapers.She has said of the break-up: 'I left our home to work on a movie, and while I was away, my boyfriend got married, and I’ve never heard from him again.
'It’s like a sudden death. For no one has there been any closure or clarity.'
Following the Thornton-scandal, Dern eventually met Harper at one of his concerts in 2000.
At the time he was separated from his first wife, Joanne, with whom he has two children.
