Actress Elaine C Smith, whose regularly appears in pantomime and has been in the West End show Calendar Girls and is best known for her role as Rab C Nesbitt’s wife Mary, will play the 50-year-old Scottish singer.
Boyle, known as ‘SuBo’, has sold more than 14 million albums. She said: “I never thought my life story would end up on the stage but a lot has happened in two years and it is a very exciting prospect. I hope everyone enjoys the show and I promise there will be a few surprises along the way.”
Producer Michael Harrison said: “She is an inspiring woman. Her story has got all the qualities of a fairytale, but with the added bonus of being absolutely true.”
Even Homer Simpson is a fan of Boyle. In an episode of the Simpsons called Springfield’s Got Talent, Homer admits he is a fan. He is seen sitting in front of judge Simon Cowell at auditions for the talent show.
Asked to identify himself, Homer replies: “My name is Homer Simpson, I’m 39 years old and, well, I’ve never been kissed.”
He adds: “My dream is to be a great singer like Susan Boyle.”
The production will open at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal in March, with tickets going on sale next month. A 26-week tour of the UK, US and Australia has been lined up so far.
